  1. try with different speakers

    then if that doesnt work

    update soundcard drivers

    then if that doesnt work

    try a different sound card

and keep going till you find out where the actuall problem is

  2. At a guess, you're just double-clicking the sound (speaker) icon in the tray and just moving that one slider up. This won't necessarily increase the volume of the audio for the device your trying to use. Try right-clicking that icon, and selecting the "Open Volume Control" from the context menu. In the dialog that pops up, examine all settings of volume levels for devices (e.g., mine are Volume Control, Wave, SW Synth, and CD Player for SigmaTel Audio) to ensure they're set to high levels.

Troubleshooting would not disclose any problems, if the software control (device driver) is working properly and just has a very low setting for some particular device(s).

  3. I had something very similar happen to me. Here's a list of things I tried, including some other things I didn't (instead of checking the internal hardware, I used it as an excuse to get a computer that wasn't a decade old (yes, I was running XP on it, this was like 2002), in order of how dramatic a change to the system it is:

    1. Check/Update drivers.

    2. Swap out with other speakers if you have them to see if the speakers are bad.

    3. Do a repair install of XP.

    4. Swap out the sound card to see if the sound card's bad.

    5. Move the sound card to a different PCI slot.

    6. Get a new PC?
