  1. The more programs you add the slower it is likely to run as many programs add stuff that starts when windows starts. Your CPU meter in Vista is misleading and not that accurate either, dont put too much faith in what it shows you. The CPU usage will go up and down sometimes remaining very high when running things like Video or Graphics programs, Games which are very graphic intensive, it is what it does, it processes the information it is given at the time, sometimes it will mean it has no space left to process, other times what it is asked to do does not need much processing.

If you mean the CPU meter is now always at 34 to 100% check the running processes to see what is causing the usage, control+ Alt+ Del will open task manager and see what is using your resources, if it is a sytem function it is best left to do its thing, if it is listed as a user function you can (if you dont need it) shut it down. Things like updaters for toolbars and search engines, indexing services often run in the background, this is most likely where you extra CPU usage is generated. Go to Programs and Software in Control Panel and remove the updaters, toolbars and indexers not associated with Vista and this may solve your problem.

  2. I had the same problem when I first started using Vista and it bothered me a lot. One way to help it I found was in power options in the control panel. It's usually on the "balanced" setting. I use the high performance setting and the cpu usage went down quite a bit.
