I have water geting in my lower unit. Is this a big problem or not?

I have been draining the water out every so often, but am concerned that this might lead to other problems in the future. Should I just keep draining the water out or should i take it in to the shop. Where would be the most likely place for the water to be geting in at.

  1. yes it is you got to get it fixed or it may mess up the lower unit

  2. i agree with 45 cal, any shortcuts might cost you alot more

  3. give 45cal the 10 Point,s, for best answer

  4. if you you should happen to hit a sunerged object your ins co might help

  5. I am not going to agree with 45cal mainly because as long as there was oil in there that does not mean the lower unit is damaged. Though water and oil do not mix what water is in there settles at the top. Now if there was NO oil in there at all and you were draining out ALL water then yes there is damage. Take it to a repair shop to have it fixed ASAP. Do not continue to run it this way because you will damage it. The reason why I said here what I said is because he is not telling everything. He did not state wether it was all water or some water. As long as gears and bearing have some oil to lubricate them then that prevents total damage. Not saying a low oil level is ok but even a low oil level prevents total damage. Again get this fixed ASAP because once all oil is gone then you WILL damage it.

  6. Your lower unit has gears that need oil.  Water rusts and destroys gears, plus lack of oil.  Get it fixed before its too late.

  7. ok first lets be simply firs

check your oil fill screws and make sure they have o rings on it to prevent water intrusion

if that checks out good take it to a repair shop you probably blew a seal hopefully you didnt crack the outdrive  go easy first and work your way up

  8. The damage is done Don't use it get the seal replaced and what ever else needs replacing>

  9. huge problem. you will  have to change it.

  10. 45cal and biff....

Seals or loose screws..check screws first if you want, but I'd just take it for service.

You can be lucky...you can also totally toast your gearbox.

    Which would you want?

  11. Don't listen to GW.  The water stays on the bottom of the oil, therefore it drains out before the oil when the oil drain s***w is removed.  Any water in the lower unit can damage the gears.

Take it to a shop that is certified to work on the brand of motor you have.  A reputable marine technician will completely reseal the lower unit and also check the gears for any damage.

  12. The seals in the bottom end are leaking. Take it to a dealer and get an estimate. If you dont fix it you will ruin the gears etc. BIG $$$$$
