Question:

I have weeds galore in my front and back yards.?

I know we can spread weed killer but then I would have to wait 3 weeks to spread my seed. My uncle suggested I cut the weeds very very short (they are very tall right now), and then turn the soil and just spread my seed with fertilizer and water. Will this work? I am desperate for a clean green yard. We had a rock yard (plastic liner and rocks) and my landscaper removed it all and laid down the soil but then took a couple of weeks off and now I'm left with an ugly weeded yard!

  1. Listen to MR. MOLE he knows what hes talking about

  2. be careful with weedkillers, they often kill your grass too.

one thing that works really well is "Scott's weed-and-feed"

if you put it down it will kill the weeds, then if you turn the soil it will nourish your grass and you can put your grass seed down after you turn the soil

(you should wait a few days before you turn the soil to give the weed killer time to work)

  3. First of all, FIRE THE LANDSCAPER.....do not follow the advice from your uncle. You are desperate for a clean green yard, thenfirst you must get rid of the existing weeds, and you won't do this by putting them to bed, You must pull them out and get rid of them, if you bury them they will simply come back even stronger. there will be enough weed seed already in the bed to keep you pulling them for months as it is. There is no REAL need to turn the soil over, to grow grass seed, you need only an inch or two of tilth, you can achieve this with a rake or a hoe.Once the top soil is nice and fine and dry , and of course you could use a tiller to achieve this too,  spread you seed, rake in lightly, then roll to nice and flat. Get the rocking chair out and wait for your nice clean green yard to develope. Germination time for grass seed..10 days.

  4. In my yard, weeds are just flowers that haven't learned to grow in straight rows. Let the weeds grow and God will be happy.

  5. Use a dark tarp or plastic covering to smother the plants.  Wet the ground and place the tarp/plastic over the weeds.  Anker with rocks or other heavy items so that the tarp doesn't blow away.  This may take a few weeks to smother the plants but if you keep the tarp down a month, depending on how hot it gets in your area, you kill the roots and all.  Then you remove the tarp, rake the area, apply grass fertilizer and then place grass seed down.

This process takes a bit longer than weed killer but the result is a uniform lawn.

The plastic liner under rocks keeps weeds out for a while, but it also suffocates roots of trees and shrubs nearby.  It also promotes subterrainian beasties like scorpions to move in.
