The versions of windows xp are as follows -

Windows XP Home Edition

Windows XP Professional Edition

The SP denote the service pack installed.

Service pack 3 is the latest and will be final service pack for XP.

Service packs do NOT upgrade from one version to the other, they only provide hotfix's for security loop holes, and system performance & stability fixs.

An original copy of XP Home is around ÃƒÂ‚Ã‚Â£87.00 retail and the Professional version is around ÃƒÂ‚Ã‚Â£110.00 so I dont think Microsoft would think it be viable for millions of users to have a free upgrade.

I had xp sp2 and after a hard drive failure HP upgraded mine to XP pro.

Service Pack 3 is the final windows update release for XP.

If your using XP home you would have to upgrade to xp pro which is simply pointless unless your a web developer, apart from the geeky tools you get nothing else extra.

No. You either have Xp Home or XP Pro and Windows updates will not change that.
