I have worked 5 out of 40 years and would like know if I am/or what I would need to do to become eligible for social security

  2. You need to have sufficient covered income in 40 quarters, so you'd have to work and pay into ss for five more years.

  3. They are correct you need 40 quarters (10 years) to be eligible for SS.

You have to have 40 unit of coverage for Social Security or Medicare benefits.  If you worked at a job not covered by Social Security, federal civil service or teaching, you will be covered by Medicare.  If you did not work--stay at home mom--you are entitled to half your spouse's benefit while he or she is alive then all of it if you are the last survivor.
