volume = length x width x height

40x50'x1.084' = 2167 cu ft = 80.26 cu yards

Don't forget to grade it for runoff properly away from the house, and maintain enough clearance from soil level to siding.  Your local code office can tell you what's required in your area.

Do not change the grade around trees unless you've checked to be sure that you won't kill them.  Oaks, for instance, are notorious for dying if the soil level is changed.
