  1. You start by measuring the distance from where you sit to watch to where the screen will be placed. Then you use this site to determine the screen size you need for optimal viewing: http://www.dtvcity.com/lcdtv/lcdscreensi...

Next step is to figure out whether you want an LCD or a plasma screen. If under 42", get an LCD! If 42" or over, either can work for you. Read these sites to gain enough general info to decide what to look at:

    http://www.plasmatvbuyingguide.com

    http://www.lcdtvbuyingguide.com

In plasma, the very best buy in performance and reliability, dollar for dollar, is Panasonic!!! If you want LCD, in most sizes Sony is the top dog. Toshiba is usually a bit less expensive and a quality set. You may want to go to your local public library and read the Consumer Reports 11/07 and 3/08 HDTV articles - pay specific attention to the reliability section.

Now that you know enough to ask intelligent questions, go to a large TV store like Circuit City and/or Best Buy and look at the TVs. (But read this first: http://www.hdguru.com/your-new-disposabl... ) Pay attention to what kind of a signal is being played on each - cable, satellite, DVD, or Blu-ray disc because it will make a difference in the picture! Have fun!

  2. The advice given by wolf is pretty sound but the sites he list are scam sites. The owners of the lcdtvbuyingguide and plasmatvbuyingguide make the reviews favor products that the sites the link to sound better. All the sites that are linked to from those sites are owned by the same company. Try calling the different numbers a day apart and ask to speak to the person you spoke to the day before you and you will see that they are all the same.

Anyway if you want to get a good review check out http://reviews.cnet.com or check out the reviews on http://www.avsforum.com

they are unbiased and written by people who are pretty knowledgable.

  4. depends on what you looking for...what size...plasma or flat panel....my best advice is try not to buy the cheapest tv you can ...my experience is always best to spend a little more(middle of the road ...best bang for your buck) so you get a better quality appliance
