I haven't driven out of town for years--I need to get back behind the wheel. I get nervous after awhile--what suggestions are to help me get calmer behind the wheel. Why do I get nervous driving--please help me. Not sure if it matters--it is a two lane highway. I would appreciate any and all help I could get-thank you..

  1. Just start driving once your down the road  you'll clam down.

  2. Have a friend ride with you at first for short drives.  Remember, you know how to drive, you've driven all your life; you know what to do.

  3. wen I got my 1'st motorcycle, i always feared going 2 fast & flopping, & i'd drive slower til i built up my confidense. i even caught myself tensing my right arm, which pushed the bike left wen I went over 45 mph. I just kept practicing & would practice relaxing that arm & I can now ride like a pro. u have the safety of a car, & the thing 2 do is go out L8 @ nite/early morn wen roads R clear, & practice driving @ lower speeds, like 45. this'll help U 2 build yer confidense. 1'st thing tho, pick a destination close 2 town that U can reach quickly. as yer confidense builds, U can go further as U build up a proper legal speed.

  4. At 52, there must be a reason that you get nervous when driving.  Could be lots of things; bad vision, past experiences, worries of breaking down, fear of being in an accident.  Other than saying wake up, put on your big girl panties and get out there; don't know what to say.  Don't take a drink or Valium before driving; I can say that.  In this day and time you pretty much have to drive just to accomplish the simplest things; work, grocery, doctor, movie, mall, church, visiting friends.  You must get to the root of your problem.  Good luck to you.

  5. Don't worry so much and you will be okay. I get like that too and it is scary sometimes. Especially if I don't know my way there. I use to take my kids with me the day before I would be leaving to help me find my way. I use to get so nervous that I would sometimes cry from being nervous. It can sometimes be hard driving when you have bad nervies. Just be cool, calm, and collected and you will do just fine on your journey. You need to have things organized before you leave by writing things down that you have to do. Don't worry so much and you will do just fine and then you will wonder how you did it after you come back.

  6. You just need to get behind the wheel and go. That's the only way I know of to conquer your fear of driving. I get fearful of driving in traffic after long periods of putting around our little town and not going into the metro areas on the freeway, so I'm pretty familiar with that nervous feeling. I get it bad even at the prospect of having to drive into a big city, so I just do it. So far nothing bad has happened.

Just so you'll know, 2 lane highways are scary for most drivers that actually give any thought to having to drive on them. Too much speed in too little space.
