I haven't ran in months...and cross country starts in 2 months...can I get in shape? How?

Hi. I was a good runner for my team last year (I got medals in most of my races; I was the 1st or 2nd fastest freshman). The problem is...I gave up on running afterwards and concentrated more on school. I didn't do track. Now I have to get back into shape for cross country season.

Our team has already started practicing (without the coach). But I am afraid that I am not in good enough shape to practice with them. Should I go and run what I can...or run on my own?

And how much should I try running?

Thanks a lot.

  1. i think you should run with your team and do what you can, and you should run on your own as well. it would help most if you ran 2 miles or so once or twice a day. you should be able to get in shape within two months.

    Good Luck!

  2. go and run what you can. thats what im doing. everyone will at least respect you for trying at the beginning before you are in great shape.

  3. 2 months should be enough to train if you were able to get 1st and 2nd place.

  4. You're not good enough to run with the team?????

that's a good thing because it will make you work harder to keep up with everyone else so you will get better faster and will have accountability.

anyway, who cares about being behind, it sounds like you have a good deal of talent so you'll be back up to speed soon.

  5. I would do both. You need to run with your team even if your coach isn't there. It will help you get better. Don't worry they proabably will not even notice. When you run by yourself really push yourself to go faster and longer!

    Good luck!

  6. Run with the team, they will help pull you along until you can do it yourself.  You can also run on your own.
