it's a staticay noise, not the usual high pitch noise that comes out of most tv's, but like a hissy staticy kinda thing going on in the back of the tv. Is it safe to tun on and use?

  1. It's probably OK. I would guess that it is the set degaussing when you turn it on. Some sets, particularly Sony, make a loud short noise when first switched on. The idea is to magnetically pulse  the tube  and neutralise any stray magnetic fields so that the picture is unaffected.

E.g. if you place a speaker with a strong magnet near to the set you may see strange colour casts on the picture nearest to the coil. See here:   http://www.homecinemachoice.com/articles...

  2. It could also be the power supply.Either way, it's ok to use as long as it goes away after a short time.

  3. I've had TVs that did that.  I think the cause is a build up of static charge around the tube as the cathode ray gun in the back of the TV fires up.  I think it's safe and normal as long as the static fades away within a few seconds as the system stabilizes.  But you might get a shock if you put your hand on or close to the back of the TV when you turn it on. Of course, my grandmother said TVs were inherently unsafe and would all explode if plugged in during a thunderstorm.

  4. The noise is the EHT ( high voltage ) arcing slightly ! usually caused by build up of dust on eht leads and transformer which in humid conditions will arc ! it is not dangerous immediately but needs to be dealt with before the hissing noise turns to sharp cracking noise . All it needs is all the eht leads and the eht transformer cleaning and drying , you can use meths as this does not conduct electricity and evaporates quickly , Pay attention to the thick lead that goes to the pic tube bowl clean all round there thoroughly . With set off at the wall there is no fear of electric shocks as some may try to warn you of , contacting the eht is no worse than contacting the spark plug on a car !!! Those that say otherwise have never worked in the Tv repair trade ! .

    Cheers Pete

  5. It may be a cooling fan. Is it an LCD TV?
