I'm planning a trip to France, but I hear that about once a year for a couple weeks all the people in Paris pack up their bags and go to Southern France for vacation?

Has anyone heard of this before? Do you know when? I'd like to avoid this time.

  1. During the summer, the Parisians (and the Français who can afford it) go and spend the warm days on the beaches in the south. But saying 'all the people in Paris' is a little bit of an exaggeration.

Anyhow, in order to avoid this, either go before the school holidays start or after they finish. They are between 03/07/08 to 01/09/08.

Also, try and avoid the tourist-central cities, such as Nice, because they are not only quite expensive (compared to the rest of the south of France) but become quite crowded. Unless of course, you like crowding.

  2. In the summer (June-Aug) tons of Parisians leave town and many go south

Tourists are not really bothered by this usually, after all they want to discover France, and French peope

Usually tourists are more bothered by Paris being empty in the summer, or invaded by other tourists (mais ou sont les vrais Francais?)

PS: If you're antisocial it's just a bad idea to go to south of France in general, as it is a desirable and crowded area

  3. I've never heard of this. When I went it was early July, and it seemed all right. I would research it though.

  4. Well, 'all the people' is an exaggeration, but August is the traditional holiday month, so Paris becomes relatively quiet and holiday places such as the south become full.
