I heard a person use the expression " you big lug." What does lug mean in this context?

It is sometimes a term of endearment but not always.  A lug nut is a piece of steel, not moving by itself, etc.  A big lug is a strong but dumb guy; the dumb part may be cute or not depending on situation.
