1980 Moscow Olympics was boycotted by US and allies to embarrass USSR for Afghanistan invasion. UK France and many european countries did play though.

1984 LA Olympics was boycotted by USSR and its allies to get back at US.

Communist Soviets promised that 100 countries will boycott the 1984 Games in Los Angeles as a revenge to US boycott in 1980 Soviet Games. And the top of the Soviets list is China. But one of the US Olympic Committee went to Beijing and pleaded to the Chinese officials to come and 3 days later the Chinese officials wrote a letter "Are you happy, now?" and then countries follow suit as ONLY 14 countries boycott the 1984 Games in Los Angeles.

For all the c**p US say about China, China not only saved a struggling economic country; the were the leaders that put 86 countries into the LA Games.

Actually there were 2 boycotted Olympics.  In 1980, the USA boycotted the Moscow Olympics in protest to there invasion of Afghanistan.  In retaliation, the USSR boycotted the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles

Jimmy Carter, being the utter political genius he is, boycotted the Olympics in response to the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan! I don't think he has ever heard what his party stands for in foreign affairs. Diplomacy.

Anyways, he boycotted 1980 Moscow olympics and the Soviets in turn, boycotted the 1984 Los Angeles games.

The Soviets boycotted LA 84 because the US led a boycott of Moscow 80. And that happened because of the Soviets invading Afghanistan.

1980 was boycotted by the USA and in return USSR boycotted our games in 1984. There were actually 2 boycotted Olympics that I am aware of.

Los Angeles 1984.

It was in the middle of the Cold War. The USSR and the rest of the communist block boycotted the Games, and did not compete.

It was in response to the USA boycotting the Moscow 1980 Games.
