  1. At what speeds do you get the 50MPG? MPG varies based on driving style and your driving speeds. MPG decreases rapidly as you drive faster. I know I am not Answering your Q but I wanted all of you to remember this fact.

Also here are some interesting facts about the concern for speed that I got from the daily spotlight blurb posted by Answers.com for 11/25/2007.

Spotlight: A worldwide oil shortage led President Richard Nixon to sign the National Maximum Speed Law on this date in 1974. The law took the power of setting highway speed limits from the state governments, and enforced a national speed limit of 55 mph/ 88.5 kmph. In order to get the states to comply with the laws, Congress made receipt of state highway funds contingent on the speed limit. Police patrolled the roads with radar guns, fining offenders. As a result, less oil was used and there were fewer fatalities on the roads. But, that didn't keep drivers from demanding higher speed limits. In 1995, Pres. Bill Clinton signed the National Highway Designation Act, rescinding the earlier bill.

That was 34 yrs ago when we knew then OPEC was trouble and forecated growth in demand for crude for fuels would otstrip supplies. We estimated crude to hit 100$/bbl by the year 2000. We the oilco forecasters were off by 7 yrs probably bec of CAFE and bldg insulation improvements and other conservation and efficiency improvements President Carter (Yes, CARTER) put in place. These are historical facts not my subjective beliefs. OR POLITICAL SPIN!

  2. deisel gives better mpg than comparable petrol, so a normal car can easily give 50+mpg, especially on long journies where it has time to get up to temperature and run at constant load.

but don't expect 50mpg from a Stupid Ugly Truck.

  3. If I remember correctly diesel engines require much more oil to run than a gas engine. So I'm not sure if it balances.

  4. My 3700 pound Mercedes gets 38 hwy with 50% biodiesel and 50% used cooking oils.

  5. Old news. The VW Rabbit Diesel in the 70's or 80's got 50 MPG. There are better designs today. Just can't seem to get people to embrace them. Diesels are great. Wish there were more offered in the US.

  6. No problem in a VWRabbit or Jetta!

  7. I get 53 MPG in my Gasoline powered 95 Geo Metro 5 speed

  8. Actually, if you are using a motorcylce, you can get maybe 200 miles to the gallon.

It depends on the vehicle, the fuel, the driver.

  9. With the right car you can do 50 mpg with regular gas too. That figure doesn't really mean much without some context.
