and it goes against the drivers license.. NO drivers license and it goes against your future license. If you get 2 of them then no drivers license until you are 18... What do you think about that and how is that fair? Hey "a moving violation?"

  1. Sounds good to me. The rules of the road apply to people on bicycles the same as those in motor vehicles.

  2. I think it's fair. If you are driving on the street or riding a bicycle on the street, you should follow street signs. It's like that in a lot of states. It's not any safer for a bicyclist to run a stop sign than it would be for someone behind the wheel of a car to run a stop sign.

  3. Cyclists are required to follow the same rules cars do. Yes, you can be ticketed for any violation same as if you were driving a car.

  4. As an Illinois resident and recipient of several tickets while riding my bike (all speeding like 35 in a 25 zone, because they said I had a smart mouth) yes you will get a ticket but it does not go against your drivers licence.  You have to pay a fine but no points on the DL.  The way the law is written for DL points it has to be a motor vehicle to count against your licence.

  5. Not just Illinois, definitely Michigan also, I think in most states they have these laws. They weren't enforced very well before, but with the increase in gas prices there are many more bikers on the roads nowadays. This has caused a lot of friction between bikers and cars, for multiple reasons. Some places have employed bike cops to be able to catch the bikers (They could just bike down a one way street the wrong way to get away from a car cop).

I, personally, think it is a fantastic idea. Just because they are not in a car does not mean they should not be subject to moving violations. To be frank, I have come across many bikers who just don't seem to give a c**p about the cars and always seem to think they have the right of way. This is DANGEROUS. With laws being enforced on both sides it can decrease the tension between motorists and bicyclists, making the roads a little safer for all of us. It may put them out of the way a little, but we all have to adhere to laws, they should have to too.

  6. Yep, you can be cited and the fine is just the same as if you were in a motor vehicle.  If they feel you may skip out of paying the ticket they have the legal right to impound your bicycle until you pay.  Some cities have set up a special safety school you can go through instead of getting the violation on your record.  Crashing red lights, running stop signs, and going against traffic are three really bozo things to do, ticket threat or not.  It's not so funny when it happens to you standing there in broad daylight with a cop hovering over you with his ticket book open just for you.
