I'm going to paris this summer, my father recommand that I buy the "carte orange" to get around. He also told me that sometime they won't sell "carte orange" to tourist. Is it true?

What do I do if they won't sell me? Also, why won't they sell me the ticket? Do I need a photograhp to buy the ticket?

  1. Yes you need a photograph for the Carte Orange.

Some ticket sellers will insist this is only for Paris residents and try to sell you a Paris Visite pass (which isn't as good a deal generally).

If you're refused don't bother arguing just go to another ticket booth.

  2. It's in two parts. The "carte" which you stick your photo onto in a plastic holder.. This is free. Secondly, the "coupon" which you have to pay for. You have to get the cartes from a booth, but the coupons you can buy from a machine.

When I went to my local metro to get a couple of blank cartes, I casually mentioned they were for some family members who were coming to visit. The man at the booth handed me the cartes, and said that they weren't supposed to give them to tourists, but if I had any trouble getting them I should go and see him.

The "Navigo", based on RFID technology, is being phased in. But the carte orange as we know it is still going strong.

Note that weekly coupons run from Monday to Sunday. Monthly coupons are for a calendar month.

  3. They don't have to refuse te sell a carte orange to tourists. You just need a picture of you. You don't have to prove you are a tourist or a french citizen or anything else. Just say you need a carte orange and they give you.

  4. I don't think they are giving out "carte orange" anymore.  We now all have magnetic passes called "navigo"

Check out the RATP website, there is an English version

  5. Well they may have changed things, but I bought one in 2004 for a week I think....I didn't need a photograph.....I think that maybe for the longer tickets.

I would check out and see what kinds of ticket you can get as surely there has to be some consession ticket you can buy.
