  1. What do you mean by avoiding?

Truth be told that racism toward black are everywhere even more so in Asia (Thailand) because they don't have proper education about BLACK CULTURES. Thai people watch news, movies, listen to rap and hip-hop musics and tend to think Black people are bad guys. Sadly, Thai people also look down on dark skin colors (Dark skin Thais are viewed as working class and unpretty).

If you are a nice guy--don't be discourage because there will be someone who see your true color. Of course, not all black people are ghetto. Actually, I have many black friends who is highly educated, well-manner, millionaires in Washington DC.

  2. Not really. Some are really curious about chocolate man.

  3. certain members of certain working demographics avoid members of certain races due to certain myths about the sizes of certain things.  The fear is that spending time with the chocolate man would detrimental to certain future working arrangements.

However, there is a certain percentage of that same working demographic that embrace the chocolate man, hoping to cash in on the chocolate man's superior genetics.  Just ask Tiger Wood's mama!

Outside that given demographic, there are some racial stereotypes here, one is that blacks are either poor or kee-neeow.

If you are worried about former demographic, Sukhumvit Soi 3 is a playland for you, and also just about anywhere in Thailand's 'extreme' city.

If you are worried about the latter demographic, hang out with the younger people here, stay near military installations, and universities and you will be accepted.

don't worry, not all people are small minded in Thailand... just most.

  4. No more than anywhere else. I have been going there for many years and have never heard anybody speak badly about Chocolate Man.

To be honest, most of my Thai friends do there best to avoid Arabs and Indians.

They say they are cheap charlies and smelly. I have never them bad mouth anybody else. x*x

  5. It depends. I never saw 'chocolate men' :-D have any problems on tours in touristy areas. In less touristy areas you see lots of 'chocolate men' loafing around. For example Pratunam or Sukhumvit Soi 4. Those guys often are up to no good and people rather avoid them.

I have no problems at all with black people, but I would not want to visit one of the African(s only) bars on Soi 4.

  6. Diabetes, you see.

  7. Well, actually there are three reasons why. (From my perspective)

    1. Language barrier - Thai People scare to speak English, so they tend to ignore foreigners and chocolate man. This may give you Impression that Thai people donot like you.

    2. Thai people has been taught to be scare of Chocolate man more than other foreigners because of the stereotype that black represent unclean and non-innocent. They have been taught that chocolate man is a bad guys by watching TV while the truth is chocolate man is the same with everybody as we are all human.

    3. Thai has been taught to be shy and not communicate with others people they donot know well. They have been taught to be smiling on everything whether they understand it or not. However, there are people who never smile as well.

    Suggestion:

Anyway, if you are staying in the tourist location like in Sukhumvit or any Shopping Area - Pratunam, Siam, I guarantee that you will have no problems staying in Thailand  But if you stay in a local place, you may have some problems communicating with people and being avoid.

The only way you can break their avoiding rule is just to keep SMILING.  A sincere smile would change their stereotype!
