  1. I am unfamiliar with that particular project but in my opinion most oil is from a deep hot biosphere that consists of methanotrophic (meaning they eat methane) and tranform it to oil.  Bacteria transform sugar to alchohol.   Perhaps these genetically engineered bugs are better at eating more diverse foods to produce the fuel.
