I heard you are fingerprinted when applying for a driver's license in California?

Is this true? Just new applicants or renewals also? Are they entered into the national or state fingerprint database? Controversial but probably good for crime solving-should/will all states do it?

  1. Everyone with a photo ID or a DL is fingerprinted & photographed in California.  I've been living here for 55 yrs & driving since '68 & it's not a big deal.  Don't all states do this?  It's only one finger...get over it.  If you apply for welfare or food stands, they print ALL of your fingers & immediately log you into the database...that's just the way things are these days...it's all done electronically, so you don't have to worry about that messy ink any longer, like in the old days

Edit:  If you need to get a replacement before the expiration date, all you need is your finger to prove who you are, along with the paperwork & current fees (apx $27), then they mail it to you after they match your print.

  2. Yes I just got my liscence here about two months ago after having NC liscence and they took my thumb print and gave me a written test and gave me a head shot and made me do 300 push ups before I could get them.

  3. yes it is true

  4. Yes you are finger printed and a mug shot is also taken everytime you renew your liscense.

  5. Its just a finger print of your Right thumb print.

And a picture for your ID

  6. Only your right thumb print.  And it isn't what you think when you hear "fingerprint".  It is imaged with a scanner.  There is no ink.

Your thumb print is exclusively for DMV use, if somebody tries to get an ID in your name, they will have to be thumbprinted (and if the prints don't match they will be detained be security on the scene).

  7. or a thumb if you have no fingers.  Sorry, Brian Reagen joke. haha
