I help kids with autism, one is openning up to me how do i help?

I know that he likes airplanes and knows tons of facts about the titanic. He also needs help with speaking and social behavior

  1. Just do stuff like you would with any of your friends. That's all he wants. Don't yammer at him incessantly, don't touch him too much, and never talk and touch at the same time.

    If he uses fidget items as a way to help with anxiety, you could try to have extras on hand for when he loses his. But don't go out of your way to find stuff on his favorite topics. Those are his "security blanket" and also his escape, and he will meet those needs for himself. In fact I have a theory, as a mom, that if you present these things, you drive the person into escape mode because they take those things and retreat inside their head, even if it looks like they are spouting them to you. He's not saying them because he needs you to know them.  He's saying them because it makes him feel better.
