I here this a lot in Mexico can you explain?

Question

It is a funny item that any Mexican that hears it bursts out in Laughter.

No hay de queso--no mas de papa.

It was played out by "Chesperito"

This is what I think--In Spain the say no hay de qeso which I think is the equivelent to "Dont Mention it"

I know there are some smart, bi-lingual Mexicans that can give me the skinny on this

Hmmm, I am a Mexican descent but i have never heard that in Mexico when i go. Well i probably wouldn't know anyways since I don't watch that "chispirito" show.

In Spanish when you say thank you "gracias", you can get the common answer "de nada", or "no hay de qué" (almost like it's nothing, or don't mention it).

From this last reply comes "no hay de qué...so, nomás (slang for nada más) de papa", which would be something a quesadilla vendor would say, like I'm out of cheese, there's only potato.

I hope I helped you, even though it doesn't seem that funny when you think about it, does it? Maybe it was just the character Chespirito played in his TV show, which was one of two insane brothers, named Chaparrón Bonaparte....

Maty is correct,no hay de que translates to don't mention it.

No hay de queso No mas de papa is perhaps some sort of play on words and without a context I wouldn't venture a guess.You're probably aware that Mexico City,if that is where it originated,has a language (slang) all it's own.
