I have a 89 johnson 88 hp. I released the trim with the valve and lifted the motor and locked it up. It will push on the lock down but will not go up.

  1. if it has a trim pump then see if you have power going to the blue wire rule of thumb is green wire is down cause grass grows on the grond and blue wire is up for the sky is up and the other is the ground

  2. Can you hear the trim motor working when you push the up button? If no you have a power problem,if yes then you may have done some damage to the system internally.I hope not,

    good luck.

  3. Um, my first instinct is one has nothing to do with the other.

For a engine that only goes one way my first answer is always solenoid. Second answer is make sure there is plenty of fluid in the reservoir.

Hitting the rock may have had nothing to do with it.

    Best of luck

  4. If the "release" failed to allow the engine to come up when you hit a rock, that shock could be transfered to the Hydraulic assembly and damaged the valving.

For an engine that is that old, I would consider getting a new one to replace an engine that is twenty years old.  The parts to repair it will cost more than it is worth.

Your other option is to remove the damaged "Lift" cylinder, plug the lines and raise and lower it by hand until the engine is just worn out in a couple more years down the road.  Provided the lower end isn't' toast from the hit.
