Last night I hit a traffic sign, knocked it over and shattered my headlight. I had no cell phone on me and I left and drove my car home. I woke up the next morning with a note on my car from a police officer telling me to call him about the accident. What trouble am I looking at??

  1. Run . !!  nothing but sign replacement as long as no other vehicle or pedestrian was involved....

  2. You will have to pay for the stop sign for sure. If you explain to the judge and officer what happened, you might just get a normal traffic citation, otherwise you will wind up with some pretty bad charges. You should have called the police that night and told them about the accident. That would have prevented most of this.

  3. Leaving the scene charges and paying for the sign.

You should have gone to the nearest phone,   called and returned,  or at least called and reported it when you got home.    The fact you had the note indicates you did neither.     Someone saw you and reported your accident.

  4. Pay for it now so that you dont get hammered later, just go in an tell the truth.

  5. Leaving the scene of an event.

  6. well i think you probably have to pay a fine. If i were you i would go and get it over with.

  7. Are you sure it was really a Police Officers Note?

Seems odd the police would not have knocked on your door.

Leaving the scene of an accident without reporting.

If only damage accrued to your vehicle, that's one thing. If you caused damage to someone Else's property,  you might have some serious consequences that would include the cost of the property you damaged to the city or state , an a ticket from the police for leaving the scene.

  8. a hit and run. possibly. u should have waited until the police showed up. u might have to pay for a fee.

  9. Primarily, leaving the scene of an accident involving property damage.  Since you didn't have a cell phone, you needed to call the police from a phone when you got to one, not just go to bed.  You might also get a careless or reckless driving ticket depending on what the po determines led you to hit it in the first place.  Just give a straight story and hope for the best....there may well have been a witness or a camera running!

  10. Failure to report an accident for sure. Damage to a traffic control device or at least property damage of some sort. Call him I'm sure you'll find out.

  11. Call the officer, I'm sure he will tell you what you need to do to make good on the sign you wrecked and how to put this situation behind you.

  12. could be reckless driving,

    failing to report an accident,,

    criminal damage,,

driving with undue care and attention,,

leaving the scene off an accident,,,

driving an unroadworthy vehicle,,,, ie damaged lights

plus,,they will be grumpy about you leaving road traffic lights damaged,,,,, that may have contributed to a serious accident

    deep deep doobie,,,,,,,,

  13. Ooo...That was a bad idea to LEAVE the scene in the first place. You might get two tickets. ONE, for a Hit & Run. And TWO, for hitting the sign.
