Question:

I hit my irons TOO high and lose lots of yardage and control. Any guidance on how to get my trajectory down?

My irons are Adams Idea A1 pro series with stiff steel shafts. The wind absolutely kills me with the trajectory! Basically, I hit a 5-iron the height that I should be hitting an 8 or 9-iron. I play the ball properly in my stance (middle-back as I move towards the higher # irons) and it doesn't seem to make much difference. I have the same problem with my driver, but there is more issues then I want to get into with that.

  1. i used to have the same problem and i found that if you put the ball closer to your front foot rather than in the middle the face of the club will naturally close and stop the ball from going as high hope this has helped also if it still goes to high you might try a swing doctor .... a good swing doctor could probably help you correct you swing in about 20 mins good luck hope ive helped

  2. put the ball in the back of your stance a little bit.

  3. My bet is that 5 irons and 8 irons reach the same height, anyways.  Move the ball back even further, set up with your shaft leaning slightly towards the target.

  4. It's not the club, it's your swing. I use to do that too, but one pro talked me down badly and show me the way. You need to hit on the way down esp. with high loft club like wedges or short irons. One a decending blow, you deloft the club naturally, take a divot and the ball flight will be lower and take loads of spins. Don't try that on the driving range carpect with cement under it, you ruin your club and your wrists.

  5. Try closing your club face and swing your club more side-ways than upright.

  6. Only if you don't inhale. By James Ledbetter Posted Thursday, April 17, 2008, at 4:00 PM ET?

  7. flopping your wrists to much. At address set your hands in front of the ball . This will reduce the  loft of the club and if you flop the wrists you should still be able to be lower loft then not. also makesure your not dropping your right shoulder(if rt. handed) that will create a digging effect on your swing. concentrate on keeping the wrists stiff untell you get better . then you can set the wrists for more power

  8. Your swing may be a little too vertical. You might try taking the club straight back away on your first move from address. This could help widen your swing arc so your not so abruptly downward coming into the ball. But that's just my opinion. Good luck.

  9. You're catching it on the upswing... KEEP moving it back UNTIL you are hitting it properly. It's nothing else but ball placement

  10. It sounds to me like you are getting to steep with your downswing. Which will cause the ball to balloon in the air and then just basically drop down. this is easy to do with the longer clubs. I would just slow your swing down just a bit. just work on tempo. you are probably getting your body out in front of the ball which will cause the club to come down to steep even with the ball toward your front foot. so just slow down a little bit and see what happens.

  11. You are probably cupping your wrists at impact.   The clubhead is getting ahead of your hands.  Try to keep your hands ahead and your shots will come down.   Try some half swings to ingraine the idea, then hit full shots.
