  1. no, not a u s citizen or drivers lisc.

  2. Possibly.  It depends on the terms of your friend's auto insurance.  Some insurance companies insure the driver (regardless of car), some insure the car (regardless of driver as long as they have permission).  But the driver has to be properly licensed.

And the requirements for the license may also vary from state to state within the US.  You should check whether your UK license will be good in the state your friend lives in, or what other kind of temporary international license you will need.  Then ask your friend to have a conversation with the insurance company.  In the conversation, don't say "Can I do this?" but instead say "I want to make this happen.  What needs to be done?"  It is possible there could be an additional fee to add you as a driver for the short period of time you will be traveling in the US.

    Have a great summer.

  3. In the United States car insurance goes with the vehicle, not the driver. If you are here as a tourist / visitor for a (relatively) short period of time you may drive your friends car with their permission. Your U.K. driver license will be valid, and their car insurance will cover you while driving their vehicle. Enjoy your stay in the "states".
