“I hope Angelo will be a good captain” says Dilshan- Cricket News Update
Sri Lankan opener, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/DPMD-Jayawardene-c1397,
will have to captain the Lankans at least until the 2015 World Cup, giving Mathews time to groom.
"You can't give someone the captaincy all of a sudden. He (Mathews) has to be groomed under a good captain for two to three years," Dilshan said after a training session at the R Premadasa Stadium. "Not just on how to handle things
on the field, but also off the field. Those are some of the things I learned. It's not easy, mind you. I hope Angelo will be a good captain, but he has time. He has to work under Mahela,” said Tillakaratne Dilshan.
The position has been under debate for quite a while. http://www.senore.com/Cricket/India-c750. However, that move yielded limited
success. Following a loss away to http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Australia-c746 on home before their dismal run started.
They lost the consequent ODI and Test series against the Aussies and faced defeats at the hands of http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Graham-Xavier-Ford-c60657 as their new head
coach, and Jayawardene was elevated to lead the side, albeit for a short term.
That change somewhat proved successful as it helped the Lankans to get back their fighting spirit, evident from their displays Down Under. However, with the veteran trio now entering the twilight of their career, it leaves SLC with
a difficult task of naming a successor.
The most suitable choice is Mathews, who is the vice-captain of the side. The player has long been considered as a possible replacement but the only stumbling block remains his fitness. The player’s three-year career has been blighted
with injuries and it remains to be seen whether the all-rounder could fill the role. Dilshan therefore reckons that the current skipper might be the appropriate choice.
“I think Mahela will have to shoulder the burden till the next World Cup," added the opener.
