I put it in the sink because i was changing the bowl water and i wanted to give the goldfish a little space because it looked so sad in the small bowl. Okay so i mistakenly pressed the drainer and as quickly as i could i pulled the drainer back up and the tail fin got squished and now its bleeding. He still swims a little , but i think its in pain. I dont want it to die. Tomorrow im going to buy aquarium salt, to help him heal. Is there anything else i should do?

  1. My baby oranda had his/her tail stuck under an airstone and his dorsal and claudal(back fins) were shredded and bleeding too. It healed in 3-4 days i think and now he is swimming fine. Getting aquarium salt is a good idea and try to keep the water quality perfect if u want it to heal. Also try getting a new tank 20 gal atleast for a fancy and 50+ for a common/comet. Try treating with melafix because this is like neosporin for fish as i have heard.....

  2. Get the melafix becuase likely your fish will get fin rot and the melafix will help the torn fin. Ive used it and it worked pretty good. Then pray!

  3. get fin rot so it does not get infect this kinda happened to me but instead the fish chewed her tailed and it got infected so buy finrot so it does not get infected good luck

  4. You will need to get the fish out of his small bowl eventually, but that's a lecture for another day.

You don't necessarily need aquarium salt. Do you have pickling salt, or coarse salt, or kosher salt? As long as it doesn't contain any anticaking agents -- usually listed in the ingredients list as 'yellow prussiate of soda' -- it should be ok. Aquarium salt is the same thing except more expensive.

To help him heal, I would salt your bowl to a 0.1% salt solution, which is approximately 1 TEASPOON per gallon.

Do you know how many gallons your bowl holds?

Add the teaspoon(s) of salt to DECHLORINATED water in a mug, dissolve it, and slowly dribble it into your bowl over a few hours so as not to shock your fish with the sudden increase in salinity.

Do you have a dechlorinator? Or do you add tap water directly into the fish's bowl? (Doing this will result in chlorine poisoning.)

I would recommend posting at thegab.org's Sick Goldfish forum.

They will be able to give you friendly advice and help you get your fish back on track without overwhelming you with information. The mods are extremely knowledgeable and helpful.

Best of luck to your fish :)

PS. the product melafix, mentioned below, is pretty much throwing your money down the drain. It's tea tree oil & its efficacy is negligible at best. Pimafix is similarly useless.

  5. well theres not much left for you to do but pray and hope for the best

and dont become to attached to the fish while its hurt because it could die any day so i just hope for your fishes recovery

  6. Maybe take it to the vet?  Never heard of that happening!!!

  7. heres what you can do....don't buy any more fish until you know how to properly care for them.

  8. That sucks but hey accidents happen right. I would go out & get this stuff called melafix it is a medication that treats any type of wound promotes healing & protects against infections. You can get @ any pet store even @ walmart. At least you had nobile intentions & getting your fish a bigger home is a excellent idea. Good luck to you & I hope your fishy starts to feel better. Maybee you can get him some frozen blood worms for a treat & it sure would be a yummy way to say sorry while making him feel better.
