If it is a writing desk then probably it was a retirement gift to a respected teacher. As you are in Birmingham then the  B could stand for that and could end "day school". Perhaps the local library could help you find it or a query in the local paper. Good luck. I have a similar desk with inscription to a teacher.

Searched for BMTDS without any plausible results, possibly a retirement gift to the head of a school.
