  1. Sometimes the answers given make my head hurt...

This is for XP... You need to perform a repair installation of your OS. Be sure you have your Windows product ID (serial number).

Boot from your Windows CD. When given the option, press Enter to set up Windows. Hit F8 to accept the licensing (no choice on this). Highlight your Windows installation and hit "R" to perform the repair.

From there on in, Windows will do its thing. You will have to choose your regional and language options at one point during the repair installation, as well name you workgroup/computer. After it finishes and reboots, you will be asked to register. You will have to give it the name(s) of what account(s) you want on your computer and let it finish.

  2. Can you please provide more information such as any error message you are getting on screen. Does the machine boot up or does it not start at all? Any beeps that the system makes etc.

It may be that you have connected all the components to the motherboard correctly. Make sure that all power cables, the processor, RAM, IDE/SATA cables for your hardrive etc have been fitted correctly.

  3. I think that along with replacing those elements you also have to replace the sound card and graphics card.
