I installed a new light, and now another fuse in our house has to be in the off position in order for everything to work. What did I do wrong? Did I somehow reverse something?

  1. You have to turn one circuit breaker off (which turns all of its outlets and fixtures off) before the new light fixture will work on its circuit breaker?  You definitely have it cross wired somehow if that is what you are trying to say.  Call a professional.  If you just mean you have to turn the wall switch off for the light to turn on, simply remove the switch, turn it over and s***w it back into the box.

  2. Is this a 3-way switched light fixture? Meaning that normally the light fixture can be turned on/off from two different switches? If this is the case and now the light only works when one is in the "off" position then you have connected the wires incorrectly at the fixture. Without seeing the wires this is very hard to explain over a text message. I would suggest calling an electrician. Or at very least get a basic wiring how-to book that gives good illustrations of various lighting/wiring situations.

If however you really have a fuse (most likely actually a breaker) in your main box that has to be off to make the light work you have a much more serious problem and should definitely contact an electrician.
