Question:

I installed dishwasher and after running for about 30 min it tripped my disposal. The disposal overheats.?

Everything shuts down. I reset the disposal and ran the dishwasher again and the disposal overheated again and shut down. The disposal will run when the dishwasher isn't plug in but the dishwasher won't run when the disposal is plugged in. The washer seemed like it was running along time without draining but it's new so I don't know how it's supposed to work. Could it be a grounding issue or a problem with the outlets? This is my first try at this type of thing so any advice would be greatly appreciated.

  1. Shows like a overload situation or a weak breaker. Check your manufacture manual or something close to reflect rating of your equipment. If the combination exceeds your breaker rating, than maybe you need to separate them. Don't look like a grounding problem.

  2. Usually there is a plug in the garbage disposal where the dishwasher attaches.  It is supposed to be knocked out if used with a dishwasher or the dishwasher can not drain.  Did you remove this plug (refer to the disposal install instructions).

I must admit that the wording of you posting leaves me slightly confused.  What exactly do you mean by "reset the disposal"?  Are you pressing the button on the disposal itself, is it plugged into a GFI outlet that must be reset, etc...?

  3. no offense but its not right

If you don't know what to do

Call someone, and have it done correctly

jury rigging electrical appliances is not a good idea

  4. OK.  I *think* I follow you.

First off, you'll need an electrician to do any of this, as it would be confusing to you.

Check all the wiring inside the recessed box behind the duplex outlet (where you plug the appliances in, under the sink).

    Make sure:

    1) the dishwasher and disposal are not wired in series.

    2) both sides of the outlet are wired separately.  The dispoal has a switch and the dishwasher does not.  The dishwasher is always "hot".

If the circuits are correct, you'll have no problem!

  5. Yep, it seems like you have an issue with a short some where. Make sure your dishwasher is wired in right, and no short to ground is occurring. You could have an issue in the dishwasher itself as well. Very hard to say from here.

Your disposal might be wired in funny too causing positive to run to the ground on your dishwasher.

You might need someone with some instruments to check who is right there and knows what they are doing. But you might get it by checking the polarity on the wiring.

Good luck, be careful not to burn your house down!

  6. Sounds like you're overloading the circuit, but hard to tell from your description.  I don't understand why the dishwasher wouldn't run when the disposal is simply plugged in.
