I installed yahoo messenger, since then when I close an internet window the internet will shut down & restart?

Try to un-install Yahoo messenger to see if that fixes the problem. If not try this:

I would reset IE to default settings (click Tools at top of browser, then click Internet Options, then click the Advanced tab, then click Reset button near bottom, not the restore button). This may disable certain ie add-ons, but you can worry about that later, if this fixes the current  problem.
