We intend getting out of the h**l hole/rat race that is England, and going abroad to live out all our days.

Where, as a couple in our 30's , can we go and have a reasonable standard of living for about 40 years on £70,000?

Was thinking of the Philippines or Thailand.

Any better ideas?

  1. Definitely somewhere in south east asia, probably Vietnam.  It's still has many opportunities for foreigners to set up, is very cheap, and gaining in popularity as a tourist spot.  Philippines requires plane to get there, whereas lots of people do Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Mayalsia together.

  2. possibly the subcontinent like India, great weather, cheap, you could build your own home for about 20k (big 5+ bedrooms) and a lot of people speak good english there (former colony meant cambridge syllabus taught in schools)

not to mention awesome food and great sights from the huge coastlines to the himalayas in the north also social and culture rich with icons such as Taj Mahal and Bollywood on your doorstep, despite what many may assume it is also very tolerant of all faiths (if you are religious) with Hindu, Sikh, Islam, Christianity and buddhism highest on the list. you wouldnt be the first westerners to retire there...

  3. Hi My Friend,

Sounds like a good idea to me and all the very best of luck to you both if or wherever you do go. (My best friend visited Thailand on her honeymoon in Jan 08 and she said it's an amazing place to go btw)

I'd write a list of all the places my partner & I quite fancied then I'd really look into each country ie:crime rate, business/job opportunities, culture, what their laws were like etc. I'd also look into if the exchange rate worked for us or against in each country and which would make the most from our budget. Plus working part time will help. Then I guess we'd take it from there.

I doubt that was any help really but I tried!?!  :)

  4. I think you really need to re-think what you are doing.  Ã‚£70k really isn't going to get you very far without a job for 40+ years, especially with rising inflation all over the world.

Why not go abroad AND work?

  5. It's a good start but I don't think you can live on that for about 40 years.

  6. keep saving lol 40 years is a long time

  7. Go to Berlin.  There is plenty to do in the city - cafes, restaurants, bars etc, and the cost of living is low...

    Good luck!

  8. try vietnam and laos.anywhere you go,must have bought a small house.then,a garden to have all the veggie and fruits you need beside a couple of chicks ,sheeps/lambs,a horse and a cow..especially in this countries, you don't spend, just ,money.you can invest ,also some, and grow a farm with not very expensive ,manpower...you see what i mean?

    everybody eats,not everybody drinks

  9. Its not nearly enough.

  10. Thailand. As soon as you step off the plane, you're twice as rich as when you got on at Heathrow, maybe more.
