  1. You are obviously not "stuck on stupid" or you wouldn't be asking the question :-)

It takes time.  Birds are prey animals and in the wild they'd have little signs saying "lunch" on their backs.  So by nature they are cautious.  Spend time near them reading or watching television and just talking to them.  If they have any favorite foods, drop a little bite into their food dish every few times you pass by.  Don't expect any changes over night.  As they get used to their new homes and you and begin feeling comfortable you can begin slowly and cautiously getting them used to your hand in the cage.  You might also try offering them a long spray of millet.  Keep your hand still and let them get brave enough to eat from the end.  As they become more comfortable, you can use shorter and shorter sprays of millet.

Trust is the foundation for any good relationship.  Show them you are trustworthy and won't hurt them.  As that "trust account" grows, they will come around.  It will just take time, patience and perseverance.

Good luck!  And don't give up.  Establishing a relationship with a frightened little bird is a VERY rewarding experience :-)

  2. Parakeet is not what? parakeets aren't as affectionate as a cockateil

so don't worry about it it will chatter to his own image just get him a mirror and some small toys and he will be happy. The cockateil is more hands on and will want some flight and handling time from you.

  3. Parakeets often aren't quite as social.  My family has had both, and the cockatiels were always more social.

Give it some time, and some toys.  It'll come around or it won't.  If it's truly miserable, get another parakeet.  They're used to being in groups, and another bird will often be just the trick.
