Now the former owner only had him for 6 weeks and didn't know much about him and even though he'll only walk if he's being lead is there a chance he was worked with before scince he'll let me saddle him and get on him?

  1. Well Lonestar he sounds like a sweet horse. He acts like he has had some nice work done already. A lot of new horses will put up with about anything, but once settled in and feeling safe you will be glad if you took the time to actually train him. Backtrack a bit and do his groundwork, get nice voice commands, and lay a good foundation for friendship. If your going to geld him a half hour a day of longing helps with the swelling and temperament adjustment. There is a huge difference  between  tame and saddled and trained,as you will no doubt find out very soon. He weighs half a ton if hes' average..reason enough to school his manners very well. Sounds like he has been shipped around a bit, so patience and a enjoy re-schooling him. How is he for bathing, the farrier and the vet? Often those are deal breakers.

  2. Chances are the previous owner didnt know much about him or had no idea what he was doing and therefore thought the horse wasnt broken - however there is als a chance that the horse has had limited training - or your one h**l of a horse whisperer :)
