  1. You really ought not to try unless you absolutely must. If not careful, you will get water (lots) into the cylinders and can damage things. You can run out of the water for a few seconds at a time. I do this quite often, crank it, rev it a couple of times, then shut it off and go to the water. You can let it come to idle, then shut off and adjust a bit up or down as needed, wait a minute or two then test the idle again.

Those things cool via the impeller, and forward motion. The coolant also runs through the exhaust, and can "back-up" into the combustion chamber causing the motor to lock up, seize, or even damage the rods.

If you MUST try and run it out of the water, there is a fitting on top of the cylinder head with a rubber cap on it. You will need a hose connected to that with a ball valve (one you can "throttle" and open/close quickly). Close ball valve, turn on hose, crank the ski and when it is stays running, open the ball valve until you see a stream of water out of the "pee-hole" on the side of the boat. If the motor stops, IMMEDIATELY close the ball valve. That port is really made for flushing the motor, not for testing so be very cautious.
