I am still using a point and shoot conventional camera with a viewfinder and film. I am intimidated by this.

  1. Adorama is offering a workshop for Canon Digital Rebel (AKA the Kiss-series) users in mid-September. It's quite some time away but it may reinforce anything you learn between now and the course. It's $25 for a one-day workshop but you'll get a $25 coupon that you can redeem at Adorama.

Many functions of a DSLR are carried over from film SLRs. I'd suggest grabbing a book on digital photography at your local library or using the vast resources available on the internet. Here are two websites to start you off:

  2. Don't be intimidated ... it is just a tool ... one you can learn to control.

Look for a community college for class offerings in photography.  You will find that some of your fellow students can enhance your learning experience while in the darkroom or taking field trips in your amazing city to shoot the assignments your instructor gives you.
