Question:

I just bought a Canon Rebel XT how do I keep it clean?

I noticed it doesn't have an automated dust cleaner like some of the newer models, but it was in my budget, I heard nice things about it, and I am just a beginner so I didn't need anything anymore advanced. Any suggestions on how to clean it or how to store it to prevent it from collecting a lot of dust.

  2. Believe it or not the Owner's Manual will have a section on caring for your camera - how to clean the lens and the exterior.

You should definitely buy a UV/Haze filter or Skylight filter to protect the front element of your lens. Plus, its better to clean a filter than your lens. Choose from Heliopan, B+W, Singh-Ray, Tiffen or Hoya. A polarizer filter is also a good idea to darken a blue sky and remove glare/reflections from water, glass, snow, sand and painted metal - but not polished metal.

If you're worried about it gertting dusty when stored just keep it in a large Zip-Loc bag.

  3. No, the canon xt doens't come with a self-cleaning system, i think it was before that time era. Because it doens't have the self-cleaning system, you'll need to make sure that you keep it clean. Is this easy or difficult?. I had a film slr, and it was really hard to keep clean, and i ended up leaving it alone. Somehow, dust caked itself onto the camera's sensor, and i couldn't get it out. Here are some home-aid tips i can give you :

    1) the body cap- the canon xt rebel camera comes with a body cap, when a lens isn't attached, use the body cap, this will dust from coming into contact with the sensor. And should completely leave the sensor un-exposed, and protected.

    2) the lenses you buy for the camera ( most name brand ones ) come with a lens cap, and something that covers the other side that goes into the body. Make sure to use them, that way you wouldn't waste time cleaning both sides, and you could get straight to shooting :P

    3) The main thing, don't put the camera's body on surfaces that are dirty and waiting to stick to the camera, It won't necessarily get into the body, and become visible in the pictures

    Protect Your Camera, :P
