I can't make this new violin make any sound. I know it takes practice, but shouldn't I be able to make it at least screech or something???

  1. You probably don't have any rosin on the bow.  See:

  2. maybe you need to rosin you bow. Buy rosin if you don't have it. For beginners a cheap one or two dollar rosin will do. Rub the rosin up and down your entire bow (the hair) several times (a lot in the beginning). Your bow should look whiter than before. Now hold you violin up and place the bow on ths strings apply iong gentle pressure and move up and down for sound. Also you need to make sure your strings are tight enough. Tuning can be difficult at first so maybe getting someone to help will probably be best. Other than that you violin should at least make a sound although it is up to you to make music.

  3. Have you put any resin on your bow?  Are the strings tightened properly?
