I just bought a bird, and it wont eat, what do i do?

I had it for almost 12 hours, and it is a budgie.

Give your bird some time to get used to his (her?) new surroundings & to calm down.  Make sure that the food you offer the bird is the same type as the bird is accustomed to.  Good luck.

Call the place you bought the bird and ask for advice.

First of all, how OLD is the budgie. If it is less than six months, he may need to be re-weaned and is wanting baby feed again.  This can occasionally happen when bringing a baby bird home.  Other times they may be too stressed to eat. Call the breeder or pet shop you purchased him/her from.  If they suggest you hand feed it, DON"T DO IT!  Hand feeding a baby bird without proper knowledge is dangerous. You could accidentally kill or hurt your bird by either drowning it with feed or by giving it crop burn. Crop burn is caused by the feed being too hot. It burns the inside of their crop and then over a few days a hole forms in it. Crop burn is painful, and in most cases deadly.

If the breeder tells you this, first, never buy another bird from the breeder. They should be responsible enough to know not to let armatures hand feed a bird, and if they won't take it back long enough to re-wean it, then they shouldn't be caring for these creatures. Second, call your avian vet in the area and ask for his help/advice. If you MUST hand feed your budgie yourself, it is best to consult a vet and get proper knowledge and hands on training of how to hand feed. If stress or illness is the cause, you'll want to have him checked right away.

It is probably scared. It has been taken into a new place, it doesnt have any of its friends or familiarities. Give him/her time to adjust.

This is COMPLETELY normal behaviour for a new pet.
