I did not know then that extreme care has to be taken while repotting a bogainvillea. I kind of spread a little of the root of the plant as i had read on the net that while repotting a plant one should spread the roots a little so that they spread in the new soil and dont form a a ball of roots. I hope the plant survives. However, can anyone advice me any precautions i could take to save the plant. Thanks

  1. That is not true with this plant. The Bougainvillea in it's natural surroundings grows in very stony, hardly any soil, sandy ground. They like their roots tied or close together. They also do not like to be over-watered.If you think it has suffered, you may need to cut it back, and wait for it to finish sulking.Yes they do actually sulk and lie dormant for ages. But make certain it's in a good spot,no draugfhts, and water only when top of soil dries out.Keep the roots pot bound, until its absolutely too big for pot..Then you can re-pot.

  2. I have seen where landscapers plant the entire plant in pot into the soil. It is definitely not the type of plant that you want to break the soil up when you transplant it. Use some vitamin B1 when you transplant but do not repeatedly transplant- put it in an area where it has enough room, good exposure to sun and warmth and enjoy! Let me know how it does

  3. I have a beautiful bonganvillia that I have had for several years. I repot it about once a year and add a little osmocote to the soil. I keep it watered while at the same time letting it dry a bit between waterings and it blooms nicely.

It does like the sun, just keep an eye on the moisture level as it does dry out about twice a week.

Try not to do any kind of pruning for the first year and see what a beautiful show of flowers it will give you.

After the first year, you can cut it back a little in the fall or let it grow into a huge mass of leaves and flowers if you have room.

It does like it's own space and will crowd out all the other plants around it, if you let it.

  4. You cant hardly kill a bouganvillea..They can be happy root bound, and transplanted them from a pot will be no worries...They like "dry feet" ..so do not overwater ..they bloom after settled in under stress..if a bouganvillea once established does not bloom well..then you back off of the water..they will bloom more...I live in Florida, but also have lived in the Florida keys 6 years..we had one that was over 20 feet tall..we could trim it all we anted and when we wanted to control the long vining branches with no harm... Our landlord came and cut the whole thing down(which we had no knowledge of) and within a week it had stems shooting out of the trunk that was left..overwatering and cold wether is about the only thing will kill it...You have no worries about the transplant
