Question:

I just bought a maple chopping board yesterday, used it twice, and it cracked. What was I doing wrong?

I washed it both times after use under the sink with a little water and soap, and I immediately towel dried it until it was slightly damp, then I left it on the towel to dry some more. One day later, I see a crack on it. I'm going to return it, and I'm pretty sure I can get a refund, but is there something I did wrong?

I know they require more maintenance than plastic cutting boards, but I thought I was pretty careful.

  1. You definitely got a defective board.

2 days with no wood oil wouldn't cause a crack.

Bring it back, you'll definately get a refund, but as the above poster said, grab some wood oil while your there.

  2. Return it. Oiling shouldn't make a difference. It was not good wood.

    Find a bamboo cutting board.

  3. you should have OILED it with mineral oil BEFORE using it. (mineral oil found in ANY store)

  4. not your fault. must be faulty.

  5. You didn't season it with oil first.  By just doing soap and water you dried it out.  Chopping blocks have to be seasoned or they will nearly always split.

  6. you used it...too hard?
