  1. Yes. Use standard Foster type (usually rifled) slugs, not premium slugs. Basically, the cheapest slugs. They are designed for use in smoothbores, although they are more accurate in a rifled barrel. Premium slugs are generally designed only for rifled barrels.

A smoothbore firing standard slugs should be accurate enough for deer hunting to about 75 yards.

Standard Foster slugs can also be fired through a full (but not extra full or turkey full) choke,  because they are undersized to allow this.

From Wikipedia: "Most shotgun slugs are designed to be fired through a smoothbore barrel, which means that they must be self-stabilizing and capable of passing through a choked barrel. Much later shotguns were produced with rifled barrels, and slugs were designed to be fired from them with spin stabilization. As these specialized "shotguns" were far more accurate than a smoothbore gun, they also usually featured greatly improved sights. Many of these slugs use saboted sub-caliber projectiles, resulting in greatly improved external ballistics performance."

Metropol is incorrect in the comment that "There are no chokes on these....". Most of them have fixed chokes; s***w in chokes are an available option. The majority of the fixed choke ones are modified choke. The choke will be stamped on the barrel near the breech.

Also, NEF does have rifled barrels available; if you prefer, you can send the gun (minus barrel) to them and they will fit a second, rifled barrel. You can also get barrels in other gauges, a barrel with a s***w in choke, etc. at the same time. The price is quite reasonable.

  2. Of course you can, however manufacturers recommend you ONLY shoot rifled shotgun slugs out of a shotgun that has a cylinder or improved cylinder choke only, because you get the best accuracy from these two (2*) chokes and avoid damaging the barrel.*

  3. I would also be a little hesitant to shoot it out of a full choke. But certainly a mod or improved will be alright.

I have the same gun but in a 20ga mod. I did try to shoot slugs out of it a few years back and they went about 1 foot low at 25 yards. Hopefully you won't have the same experience.

But a pack of 5 is cheap and there's only 1 way to see.

  4. yep I used to shoot slugs in my NEF 20 gauge.. and even with my Maverick 88 i'm scared to shoot the 3" slugs. the pardner guns have a good bit of kick i agree but we shoot Brenneke  USA Heavy Field Short Magnum  slugs

  5. as long as it has a improved cylinder or modified choke......don't shoot slugs with a full choke

  6. just check for choke. If it is "full choke" then no. If it is any other choke, then yes. If in doubt, have a gunsmith check it, it only takes a minute to measure it for choke and it is always better to be safe than blow the end off a barrel!! As for the guy who say's New England Firearms doesn't have any choke, he is very very wrong.

    shoot safe

  7. YES - Absolutely...... I have one of those and its a smooth bore also. There are no chokes on these.... Hence they can digest slugs, buckshot, skeet/trap loads or bird shot...... You cannot use sabot slugs.... Sabots require a rifled slug barrel which your NEF doesnt have so it would not be efficient to use those. It would be safe but not effective... Use regular Foster type slugs......
