I have a tv that has two AV inputs but no audio ouputs to connect surround sound to. I also have no cable box, its running straight from the wall. I have it running through a DVD/VCR combo right now but the VCR/DVD combo doesn't have a display that shows what channel your on so your just guessing what channel your at. I have just VCR's with displays but they are all mono sound (just white plug no red plug). Is there any way to convert a mono VCR to digital or is there any way else to hook up this surround sound system to my TV without having to buy a TV that has audio outputs on it? Also are there VCR's that are digital and have channel displays?

  1. Better yet. Why not just buy a old Tivo box? If you go on Ebay I'll bet you can find some older Tivo for little money.

Look for the Pioneer Tivo DVD-R. These players come with basic tivo service (you don't have to pay a monthly fee).

Not only will you now have a way to setup your surround system. You will get to record, pause, fast forward, and rewind TV. plus it's your DVD player... How easy is that. And if you like the show you recorded, Just copy it to a DVD-R.

Plus the Tivo remote can control both your TV and your Surround system. It can even (if setup right) ture on your TV and your Surround system at the same time.

(after finding the Audio system code for Volume... use the code on the TV power and the remote will send to TV power and the Audio system power IR when you press the TV power button).

This is one cool fix to your problem.

Here's one I found on Ebay...

    ---Edit---

I was thinking about your problem. How about buying a used VCR with a front display? There has to be hundreds on Ebay. I found many for under $50.00 (Including shipping). Look at this JVC I found.

It has a front display and can be purchased using the (buy it now). No waiting! Plus I made sure to find one close to you so you don’t have to get ripped off with shipping fees.

While I hope this help you out.

Let me know if it work’s out?

  2. Do you have a Scart Socket on your TV?? if yes you can use a Multi-AV SCART adaptors here take a look :

    ---edit--

Does your Tv have Earphone hole? if yes your problem is solved and you can use your surround system, let me know.

  3. Unfortunately mono will always be mono. You could get a 2 into 1 cable but the same sound will come from both sides as opposed to stereo which will sometimes have different sounds from either side.

If you have no audio output form your TV then you will not be able to run audio from your TV to your stereo. You will have to use one of your VCRs as a tuner. It seems strange to me that your DVD/VCR combo player does not show the channel on the OSD (onscreen display).  I suspect it actually does not have a tuner in it. I ran into this with my sisters combo player. That coax input, is just another input. Because there is no tuner you can't change channels. It needs to go through a device that has a tuner first. Like a cable box or regular VCR. or a DVR(Tivo)

If I was in your situation this is what I would do.

Move into the 2000s and replace my tv. If replacing the TV is really not an option then I would purchase an external TV tuner. It may be the least costly.

It will have the stereo outputs you are looking for and will display the channel on your TV screen. Keep in mind if you use an external tuner you will have to connect your tuner, before your combo player. Your combo player will be between the TV and the Tuner. You will need this connection in order to record tv shows. Basically you are getting a "cable box" so to speak. Look here:
