Currently I have a DLP 50" HTDV and a DVD player that has 4 speakers coming out of it and a subwoofer (home entertainment center). I use my DVD speakers to watch TV (I don't use the TV speakers). Up to this point I was using the red and white RCA cables that connected from my TV to my DVD player so I unplugged them and plugged in the Toslink cable. My tv and DVD player both support Toslink. Now, there is NO SOUND. What did I do wrong?? Thanks!!

PS: I also have a Cox cable box. Should I be using that??

  1. Besides checking to make sure the DVD player toslink is an input and not an output you should also check your tv to make sure that the toslink output is enabled.  You will probably have to look through the menu of your TV to find the setting.  If your cox cable box has toslink output you could probably use that instead of the one from your tv.

  2. Make sure your TV Toslink is an output (check the manual), some TVs do not output digital audio from received programs.   Check the TV setup menu to make sure that the optical output (digital audio) is active.

Also, your DVD player may have to be set up to select the optical input.  Check the set-up menu.

    .

Check to see if your cable box has an optical output.  If so, you should be using that into your DVD  system

  3. You have to check and see if the toslink connection on the DVD player is an input or an output.

I am going to assume that this is a built in dvd player htib in a box.  That is why the speakers connect directly to the player and not a receiver.  If that is the case than you are probalby looking at an output toslink..
