I started to read the minute i got to my house and i was wondering if i need to read the exerts from under the hood in the middle of the book to understand it.

The excerpts from the "biography" Under the Hood are just as important to the storyline as the colorful "graphics".  Those excerpts, as well as the others at the end of every chapter, are part of the book, and meant to be read.
