Question:

I just can't get my shots!?

In curling (I'm a skip), I always get nervous because it's a win or lose shot. When I throw, I'm a couple cm off the broom and my weight sucks. When I practice though, I'm perfect. I know I need to relax and also since practice isn't a game, there's no pressure. But is there anyway to relax and to ignore the fact that it's a win or lose shot. I truly do stink at imaging. I've tried what everyone said at the club, and I still get the shots all wrong. Please help! :(

  1. Usually my practice is on freshly pebbled ice before a game and its speed is different than late game ice.  Maybe pass on  the post game drinks in the warm room and try some practice shots, particularlly draw weights which are so crucial in the late ends.  The real expert curlers at our club (Nutmeg Curling Club in CT), are constantly on ice practice sliding a dozen or more times before they even touch a rock.

Always take a big breath before the big shot, and let the muscles remember how to do it without brain interference.

  2. Just imagine that you are not the last person to shoot. You wont worry about that pressure of being last, or just focus your hardest on the target, and remember, its a game, not a live or die situation
