the nurse practitioner put me on metformin 500 because my insulin level was high, not low and I’ve had irregular periods since I was 11. but it didn’t regulate it and my insulin had lowered a great amount. The nurse couldn’t figure out what was wrong. But another nurse had given me some information on PCOS. so I did some research on it. and come to find out, I had every last symptom that was listed. So my mom asked the nurse to get me tested. they did an ultra sound to see if there were cyst or anything, both inside and out. they called a few days later and told me I had polycystic ovarian syndrome. ones busted/ruptured or something ,I have cyst, and I have fluid all around on the lining. something like that. my mom was in a hurry and didn’t tell me where I could understand. Anyways, the nurse wants to put me on birth control, but isn’t that used for the same reason metformin is? and is one of the side effects for metformin weight gain? because my weight is always constantly up and down,. out of nowhere I’ll lose 10 pounds and then gain 13 back. But when I went to the doctor about one in a half weeks ago, came back and found out I gained 10 pounds in only a week and a couple of days. I’m pretty sure it was the medicine, I’ve never gained that much weight in a week or so. should I tell the nurse? or should I just start watching what I eat? so after I take the pill, what’s next? is that it? I’ll still be able to have children, right? it’ll just be harder for me to conceive? or is there more to it? are they just going to leave my ruptured ovary?

  1. Sorry, you sound really confused and I don't blame you!  I have PCOS too and it's a difficult thing to treat.  Honestly the best way to treat it is with diet, exercise, and controling stress in your life.  I just bought a book called "The Natural Diest Solution for PCOS and Infertility" by Nancy Dunne.  In it, it tells the best things to eat for your body and controlling the insulin levels without resorting to medicine.  I take Metformin 1500mg a day and honestly, it's supposed to help you loose weight, not gain it.  "The pill" will make some women gain weight and some loose weight.  Also, the only reason why it's given to women with PCOS is because it makes you not ovulate and so it gives your ovaries a break and you get less cysts.  It will not help with your PCOS at all.  It does nothing to treat what is really wrong with you.  Promise me you will take a look at that book and tell me what you think.  Also, they have a website that I found very informative, it is:  http://www.ovarian-cysts-pcos.com/pcos-b...  Good luck and feel free to email me if you have any other questions!

  2. I found out i had PCOS a couple years ago. It kind of sucks but its not really bad! You should watch your weight, as in try to stick to a pretty good diet. It is VERY hard for me because I am a southern girl and I like to eat my steak and baked potatoes but as long as you moderate sweets and starchy foods you will be ok.

The metformin is actually very good! I loved it when I was on it! I actually lost a little weight being on. The birth control pills are what made me gain weight. I suggest that if you dont really want/need to be on birth control dont take it. It made me gain weight and i have read in a few places it doesnt really help with the pcos just makes you have periods, since you are young though it might not be so bad for you.

It will be a litle more difficult when you decide to have kids but just continue to work with your dr and if you can learn to help the pcos on your own you wont have very many problems!

    Good Luck

  3. If you are over weight, make sure you slim down. Exercise and eat healthy. It will be better later on. You will be able to have children it might be a little harder to have kids, but if i was you i would start BCP they help. And once you lose weight and take bcp's you will notice some symptons going away. You could even also get darker facial hair. ( i use wax lol)http://www.4woman.gov/FAQ/pcos.htm

  4. I think these are all questions you should ask your doctor. Sorry I wasn't much help.
