  2. Cataract: from the ancient greek for waterfall, because with a very severe one (The only type they knew about) the eye is blind and the pupil is white, as though it had got a white waterfall in it.

Why mention that?  Because as optical instruments got better, we were able to detect smaller and smaller "waterfalls" until they didn't look or act like waterfalls at all, though they still carry the name "cataract".

In old age, and more rarely associated with certain diseases, or drug reactions, or eye damage, cataract is a progressive condition that will need an operation at some point.

That's not a disaster: it's quick, painless, about as safe as any operation gets and has a very, very high success rate.

But, and it as a big but, the vast majority of cataracts never need operating on at all.

While the cataracts that develop and affect vision get the most attention (because they need attention!), the vast majority of cataracts are those that people are born with, which tend not to affect the vision, being very small, and never change in size.

Some congenital (present at birth) cataracts are large enough to need surgery, and there another small group of cataracts that can appear up to about 12 years of age but then stop, again rarely affecting the vision.

Small congenital cataracts need no treatment, and get no worse.

Blue dot, anterior polar, posterior polar, coronary...all can be harmless,

Larger congenital cataracts *may* benefit from removal depending on the individual case.

Progressive cataract will need treatment sooner or later, but there is no need to rush at it.  It's not like a cancer where the treatment should be as early as possible.  It's much more a "is it worth the bother?" decision.

You give no information to help decide what type you have, but to leap to the assumption that it's a progressive problem is premature.

  3. There is a quick and painless surgical procedure to remove the cataract from your eye. It's called phacoemulsification. What that means is a special tool with a small tip is used to break up the cataract and remove it. After it is removed an intra-ocular lens....kind of like a permanent contact lens.. is implanted to restore vision. Your cataract may not be severe enough yet for the surgery. You didn't say. Your eye doctor may have already mentioned the procedure to you.

  4. A cataract is a clouding of the natural lens of the eye. It is usually caused by age, but can be caused by steroid use, trauma, or you may even be born with them. The only reason to do surgery is when your vision cannot be corrected with lenses and the poor vision causes you to have difficulty in your daily life. Get a second opinion and if you havent yet, see an Ophthalmologist.

  5. It's spelled cataract.  You will probably have to have it treated at some point when your vision becomes very cloudy.  Treatment consists of removal of the lens and implantation of a prosthetic lens.

You seem awfully young to have a cataract - did your doctor explain why this has happened?
